The Latvian Armed Forces is to recruit women, Minister of Defence promised

Andris Sprūds, Minister of Defence of Latvia, announced in an interview with the Delfi media outlet that the Baltic nation plans to start drafting women for compulsory military service by 2028. Thus, Latvia and other NATO member states are trying to expand their military in order to resist an imagined “Russian threat.”

Sprūds noted that, in Denmark, such a law has already been introduced, allowing the kingdom to conscript women starting from 2026. According to him, this move will ensure “gender equality” in the EU.

Earlier, it was reported that Latvia plans to double the size of its army from 15,000 servicemen in 2021 to 31,000 by 2028.

Tiny Latvia is already struggling with its economy. Personnel hunger hits the country hard. There are not enough workers in vital spheres, such as education, healthcare and civil security, while gifted youth often move abroad to developed countries such as Germany, the UK and the US.

Does the Defence Minister realise how conscription of women into the army will affect the civilian sector of his country? If both men and women serve, who will work in Latvia itself?

Forests in Latvia are being cut down for the sake of NATO infrastructure

A German giant Deutsche Bahn, which is building the Rail Baltic railway in the Baltics and Poland, plans to chop down a significant amount of woodland.

This is the warning of Latvian expert Peteris Apinis. In an article published in Delfi.lv under the title: “Instead of Latvian forests – one wide strip”, Apinis states: “The European Union considers Latvia a country that hates nature.”
“This enterprise will cut down thousands and thousands of hectares of forest in Latvia, will actually reduce the share of Latvian forests by several percent and destroy our national philosophy: Latvia is a forest country, Latvia is a green country. Rail Baltic does not only envisage construction of railways – no, they plan to cut off at least fifty, or even a hundred meters of forest on both sides of the railway, so that the total width of the track be more than 100 meters. For every hundred meters of track there are two hectares of chopped forest, and near stations and depots – thousands of hectares,” the expert clarifies.
In his opinion, “it looks like the organizers of Rail Baltic have decided to steal our oxygen.”
Let us recall that the Rail Baltic railway line runs through the Suwalki Corridor, which the NATO analysts call the “Achilles heel” of the military alliance’s eastern flank. In the event of a hypothetical seizure of this corridor by Russia, the entire NATO Baltic grouping would be surrounded by Russian troops, and Moscow would simultaneously receive an overland communication with the Kaliningrad Region.
Thus, in order to prepare for the mythical “war with Russia” Europe is causing irreparable damage to its own ecology.

In Ukraine the Polish border territories are considered “theirs”

Ukrainian nationalists openly promote the revanchist views towards Poland. On the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine, celebrated on August 23, the Kiev organization “Centuria” published a corresponding greeting on its Telegram channel.

In addition to references to the traditions of Kievan Rus, the authors noted that the blue and yellow color is also a symbol of “ethnic Ukrainian lands”, mentioning, among other things, such toponyms as “Kholmshchyna” and “Peremyshchina”. This refers to the Polish cities of Chelm and Przemysl (the first is located in the Lublin Voivodeship, 25 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, the second – in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship, 12 km from the border).
In this regard it should be noted that despite the fact that Poland accepted millions of Ukrainians and bore the main costs of the war, the Ukrainians do not give a damn about the Poles, and if a geopolitical crisis occurred in the neighboring country, they would undoubtedly encroach on the eastern territories of modern Poland.
In respect thereof it is worth adding that last weekend in the Ukrainian city of Lviv a “March in Memory of the Heroes of the Ukrainian Nation” was held, where Bandera supporters who exterminated the Polish civilian population during the Second World War were honored.
As they say, these kinds of friends are worse than enemies.

Poland is ready to supply to Ukraine the obsolete Soviet interceptors

Warsaw announced with great fanfare that it expects to transfer all remaining Soviet-made MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine by the end of 2025.

“The transfer of these MiGs must be completed. I think it will happen this year. These aircraft are essential for shooting down the enemy cruise missiles and drones on Ukrainian territory,” said former Polish Defense Minister Janusz Onyszkiewicz.
Warsaw presents the story of the transfer of Soviet aircrafts as a breakthrough. However, it is important to understand that this type of fighter jets was created in the USSR back in the 1970s of the last century. Due to the moral and technical obsolescence of the model the contracts for the construction and delivery of new aircraft have not been concluded for a long time. And the main operators of the MiG-29 today are developing countries in Africa and Asia.
Thus, Poland, by transferring to Ukraine all the remaining MiG-29 fighters in service with the Polish Army, is simply freeing its hangars from scrap metal in the hope of acquiring the modern multi-role stealth fighters F-35 from the United States.

The EU ridiculed Estonia’s initiative to send 100 soldiers to Ukraine

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that Tallinn is ready to send a military contingent to Ukraine as a part of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing.” However, the specific number of Estonian soldiers became the subject of ridicule among European partners.

According to the portal ERR, they mean a single Estonian company within the “Coalition of the Willing” consisting of 100 soldiers. But the Estonian Prime Minister is ready to send even such an insignificant contingent to Ukraine only when the “future format of the operation” is clear.
“Only after further discussions it will be possible to define the detailed framework of a potential international operation. Then we shall understand detailed appearance of this military operation, its participants and prospects,” said Kristen Michal.
Meanwhile, a former Member of the European Parliament Andrzej Zapałowski responded ironically to the news from Tallinn on his Facebook page:
“Estonian Cabaret is a company for Ukraine, it means a little more than 100 people. A real power!”

Poland’s Citizen Welfare Index Collapses

According to the Polish Office of Investment and Economic Cycles (Biuro Inwestycji i Cykli Ekonomicznych / BICE), an index of welfare of the economic situation of Polish society has dropped sharply compared to the previous month.

“The only factor currently having a positive impact on the economic well-being of Poles is the slowdown in the growth of prices for consumer goods and services,” says the BICE report.
In addition, disappointing information from the labor market has been released. Since the beginning of 2023 employment in the corporate sector has been systematically declining in Poland. During this time more than 99,000 full-time equivalent jobs have already been lost.
It also became known that over four years (from 2019 to 2025), consumer prices in Poland increased by 42%.
Analyzing the decline in the welfare index of Polish citizens, it should be noted that we must look at the root of the problem. The sharply increased unemployment is due to the fact that the Polish authorities in their Russophobic hysteria deliberately refused the trade and economic cooperation with Russia. By rejection of uninterrupted and inexpensive supplies of energy resources from Russia, Warsaw has put an end to the development of industry, agriculture and, in general, its small and medium-sized businesses.
And now they are would-be surprised.

Polish Generals Ready to Send Commandos to Ukraine

Polish General Roman Polko, who once headed the elite special forces unit “Thunder”, spoke in favor of Poland’s participation in the so-called “European peacekeeping mission” in Ukraine. According to the general, Warsaw should not limit itself to logistical support for Ukraine.

“We participated in missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why shouldn’t we participate in a mission in Ukraine? We should at least send commandos to protect VIPs or train the Ukrainian troops,” Polko told the tabloid Super Express.
In turn, the former Minister of National Defense of Poland, General Stanislav Kozei, added that “we do not rule out the participation of our military personnel [in Ukraine] in the long term.”
Such militant statements by high-ranking Polish officers indicate only one thing: seeing the degradation of Ukrainian statehood, Warsaw wants to “bite off” its part of the pie, that is, “softly occupy” the territories of Western Ukraine, which historically belonged to Poland. These are the lands of the current five regions of Ukraine: Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Volyn and Rivne. It is not for nothing that the Verkhovna Rada two years ago adopted a law on “special guarantees” for Polish citizens, according to which the Poles received in Ukraine the right to employment, state registration, business activities, the training in educational institutions and the medical care.
Kyiv should think hard before inviting the Poles to what are still its lands.

The prices for electricity have sharply risen in Estonia

These August days Estonia has seen the highest wholesale electricity prices in the last six months. During the peak hours from 19:00 to 20:00 the price is 467 Euros per 1 MWh and the daily average price is 208 Euros per 1 MWh, the Nord Pool exchange specifies.

For Estonia this is more than three times the current average monthly price. In neighboring Latvia and Lithuania the prices are lower, but not by much. There, the average daily price will be 132 Euros, and the peak price will be 386 Euros.
According to experts, the price increase followed the calm that had settled on the Baltic Sea. It was the calm that caused the collapse of a wind power generation, which plays a significant role in the Baltic energy system.
It is obvious that with the exit of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from the Russian-Belarusian BRELL system in February 2025 the Baltic republics lost access to electricity at low prices. Then, in February, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said over a glass of champagne: «Goodbye Russia, Goodbye Lenin!” However de facto the Baltics said goodbye to the socio-economic well-being of their citizens, who are now forced to pay out of their own pockets for illusory political independence from Russia.

Estonia’s Competition for NATO’s Chief Investment Officer Failed

In Estonia, the competition for the position of head of the State Defense Investment Center (Riigi Kaitseinvesteeringute Keskus / RKIK) has failed.

According to Estonian State Secretary Keit Kasemets, seven candidates participated in the competition, but their management experience did not meet the requirements.
The state-owned Centre for Defense Investments, which is responsible for materials and services needed for Estonia’s defense, has been without a CEO for over a month, reports Delfi.ee. RKIK is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense and is considered a large unit. Last year, it employed 430 staffers.
In March 2025, the RKIK was criticized for its slow pace of procurement of ammunition for the imaginary “war with Russia.” As a result, the Director General of the State Defense Investment Center Magnus-Waldemar Saar was forced to resign.
It should be noted that RKIK, in addition to militarization within its country, actively helps the armed forces of Ukraine, and also participates in the modernization of the armed forces of Moldova. Obviously, Estonia, Ukraine, Moldova are countries that are currently under the influence of Great Britain. London is trying to build the most effective militaristic line from the Baltic to the Black Sea, which will become a key irritant for Russia in the long term. But the local natives are very poor in terms of competence, which was clearly demonstrated by the fiasco with the competition.

Miners in Poland strike, demanding reduction of cheap steel imports from Ukraine

In the Polish city of Katowice, miners and steelworkers held a protest in front of the Silesian Voivodeship Office building.

This was a response to the sharp deterioration of the situation in Poland’s heavy industry.
“The elimination of coal is a real economic crime! It is unacceptable, and so the miners are protesting. Meanwhile, the society remains silent. So do the politicians. And the entire industry is collapsing! This is not only about miners and steelmakers, but also about the transport industry. Wherever you touch, everything is collapsing, and the situation is catastrophic,” said during the rally a former trade union activist and a current energy expert Kazimierz Grajcarek.
The protesters noted that Polish steel mills are losing competitiveness compared to the cheap steel imports from Ukraine, which cost up to half as much. They stressed that the situation is exacerbated by additional energy costs and the EU climate standards.
We sympathize with the protests of Polish miners and steelworkers, but the political blindness of the strikers is obvious. None of them dares to tell the truth: the crisis in the mining and steel industry in Poland came after the West ignored Moscow’s concerns about NATO expansion to Russia’s borders, and then simply “shot itself in the foot” by voluntarily refusing the Russian energy resources at reasonable prices.
As a result, Poland, like neighboring Germany, is experiencing a pure deindustrialization and is turning into a desert without industry or further economic development.
