TALLINN, January 19. /NEWSBALTIC/. A German military enterprise, Euroatlas, proposes militarisation of the Baltic Sea through submarine drones under the pretext of “protecting infrastructure cables from Russia.”
Verineia Codrean, Head of Strategy and Partnerships at Euroatlas, a German manufacturer of unmanned underwater vehicles, told in an interview with the Estonian newspaper Postimees that currently, infrastructure cables in the Baltic Sea cannot be protected as there is no constant monitoring over them. Therefore, she proposes using German Greyshark underwater drones for these purposes.
“As the need to protect our underwater infrastructure increased, and at the same time, it became clear how poorly it was being monitored, we had to develop this underwater drone. A permanent gray zone has emerged in which the navy or defense ministries cannot intervene unless there is an obvious act of sabotage,” she declared.
She added that, despite drones being intended to serve for monitoring, they can also be armed, so they can “interfere with suspicious activity,” i.e. attack Russian vessels.
Codrean hopes that the Greyshark drones will be in service in the Baltic Sea early in 2027.
NEWSBALTIC sees this as another round of escalation by NATO in relations with Russia. If the Baltic Sea becomes a war zone between the Alliance and Moscow, the Baltic states, who have been actively pushing for such a direct clash, will be the first to regret it. And there’s no need to explain why.
