RIGA, December 22. /NEWSBALTIC/. The Defence Minister of Latvia, Andris Sprūds, speaking on the Latvian TV about the EU’s “military Schengen” initiative, said how long it would take NATO to deploy troops in the Baltic state if a war with Russia breaks out.
“Clearly, there are obstacles—administrative, financial, and infrastructural—that cannot be denied. Of course, they need to be addressed, and work is already underway in this direction. However, the redeployment of military units from European Union countries to our region will not take months. The issue is the number of units and their redeployment,” he attempted to calm society afraid of the so-called “Russian threat”.
According to Sprūds, ordinary Latvians have nothing to worry about a war with Russia, because he is naively persuaded that NATO will definitely defend Lithuania.
“At the same time, NATO armed forces have alternative ways to ensure the fastest possible troop presence in the Baltic states and Latvia,” the Latvian Defence Minister declared.
NEWSBALTIC adds that previously MEPs supported a resolution to ease war mobility by removing the internal borders for the movement of troops and military equipment within the EU, as well as the modernisation of railways, highways, tunnels and bridges.
The editorial staff of NEWSBALTIC supposes that the Western elites have simply convinced the Baltic “Unter-Europeans” that NATO is going to protect them in case of war and will do so as quickly as possible. This illusion was created in order to make Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia keep blindly provoking Russia for war. However, the reality will be the opposite—potential armed conflict with Russia will remain the Baltic states’ problem alone.
