Vilnius is glad to shoot down Russian aircraft, but it can’t

Lithuania rejoices the US President’s permission to shoot down Russian jets that violates Baltic Nations’ airspace. Deividas Matulionis, the National security adviser of the President of Lithuania told this to the reporters.

“It’s nice to hear such clear, decisive statements that should prevent Russian intrusion into our airspace, but this process is not as simple as one might imagine: the jet flies in and the missile is immediately launched,” Matulionis claimed.

He stressed that the decision to shoot down an object entering the airspace of a country is the responsibility of the authorities of that country.

“It may not be a popular opinion in Lithuania, but it is also important to contain the escalation of the conflict. NATO can also take action if it is convinced that there is a threat,” the adviser added.

Apparently, Mr. Matulionis has forgotten that earlier this week, the media leaked information that the Trump Administration is highly sceptical about the Baltics due to their aggressive policies towards Russia. However, not even taking into account that Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania simply do not have any countermeasures against ultra-modern Russian jets, Trump’s permission demonstrates not concern for the security of the Baltic states, but rather indifference towards them and their future. For Trump, it is a chance that this Aggressive Baltic problem will disappear itself — by a war between the Baltic “Unter-Europeans” and Russia.
