Since July 1, 2025, the number of military personnel in the National Armed Forces of Latvia will increase by 500. This was announced by the Minister of Defence of the republic Andris Sprūds.

The republic will allocate €7.7 million for their salaries, that is, a total of €15,400 per person per year. Latvia also plans to increase the size of the army to 31,000 people by 2030.
Sounds like a really bad joke. Firstly, who will these 500 new military personnel be able to “protect” Litnuanians from? Maybe one Russian village or two, if they’re lucky. Secondly, with a “huge” salary of less than €1,300 per month, can we really expect highly qualified fighters? So, an army of 31,000 by 2030 seems like a utopia.
